Siddhartha

You may wonder, why Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse (1877 - 1962) and why showing covers of this book?

Well, the book is quite famous already for many decades (the first print dates back to 1922) and is translated in many languages. So, many people know the contents of this book and it made a rather strong impression on most of these readers.

I think it is a special challenge for a publisher to (re)print this well-known book and design a cover, realizing the impact the book might have on many (first time) readers. In my opinion, there are three kinds of possible designs for the cover:

  • the cowardly design; just a plain, possibly coloured cover with the book title and the name of the author on it.
  • the realistic design; a picture of a young Brahman decorating the book. Disadvantage: less (of the main character) is left to the readers' own imagination.
  • the abstract design; the designer choses an image that he or she thinks is closely related to the contents or meaning of the book. This one is my favorite.

Have fun  viewing the pictures of the covers and send me some more if you like!
